In 2007, Monocle was launched as a magazine briefing on global affairs, business, culture, design and much more. We believed that there was a globally minded audience of readers who were hungry for opportunities and experiences beyond their national borders. Today Monocle is published 10 times a year out of our HQ at Midori House in London.
Monocle is a complete media brand with our print, audio and online elements – not to mention our expanding retail network and online business. Via our shops in London, Toronto, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Zürich we sell products that cater to our readers’ tastes and are produced by brands we believe in.

Ever since its launch in 2007, Monocle has been passionate about improving our cities. Each year it compiles a Quality of Life Survey, which names the top 25 cities to call home, and across the issues it has interviewed the most productive mayors, looked at the metropolises putting pedestrians first, and met the people making room for parks, both pocket-sized and plush. In this important new book the magazine's editors unpack what makes a great city and how to fix one that's flagging. How do you fashion your own High Line, create the most covetable housing, or transform a grimy river into a glistening asset? Beautifully shot and illustrated, this is a book that takes the urbanism debate away from city hall and explains what's needed in ways that will inspire us all.

The inspiration for this venture came about either in the living room of my Aunt Anita‰ۡó»s house in Toronto 32 years ago or around a table at Die Bricke in Hamburg circa 1991. Regardless of dates and location, the spark was the same I've always been a fan of Germany's news weeklies. From the age of six, my favourite magazines boasted yellow or orange borders. Whole afternoons could be lost flicking through back issues of National Geographic and more recent issues of Yáder Spiegel. A few years later, I developed a passion for Stern with its bold photography, fondness for skin and racy subject matter.
